TECUM, Inc. has developed and patented their new on-line Litigation Products Manager system with six clear objectives in mind:
TECUM's LPM system is product based for work and billing. There are no codes. Each lawsuit is made up of a series of specific steps, phases and work units. These are defined as products and drive the management and billing methods in the system. A product is any legal instrument, legal maneuver, legal procedure or main category of work. Each product is made up of a series of activities or components. Billing will be by the products utilized or established for each case. For example the answer to a complaint would include all necessary work to prepare and file the Answer. All time entries must be billed to the product the attorney is working on. The firm can establish and budget for as many products as needed to handle the litigation. Products will be billed for by the firm upon completion. Each bill will consist of only the activity and time billed for the product. There is no intermingling of fees for other products or services. The system is designed for exclusive use by the Law Firm, however, the carrier can build their guidelines into the system to alert the firm in areas were consultation is required or notify the carrier of certain changes in a case or product While the carrier cannot make entries into the system they do have view only capabilities to monitor the suit activities and progress. The system also has built into it e-mail capabilities so both the firm and carrier can have immediate communication with each other. LPM has only six screens, five for case and management information and 1 for billing entries. The billing entry screen is the only one needed for day to day billing entries on all files and all products for a given client or carrier. The remaining five screens can be used by both the firm and carrier to manage the overall direction and progress of the case, as well as the individual time and progress of each . LPM also has built into it reporting capabilities that will help the firm better manage their people and time It will also help the carrier better manage their litigation and firms. Since the carrier will be notified of certain changes in LPM based on their guidelines they will be directed to certain files and products. In addition to reviewing the product they will also be able to review the bill in progress for the status of the product and cost. Since the firm will receive the same notices they will also have an opportunity to respond or make any corrections. The billing process will vary by carrier, but in the end each product will produce it's own individual bill. This creates simplicity in billing and in review of the bill by both the firm and carrier. Some carriers may build into their guidelines a dollar amount that will trigger a bill review before the firm submits the bill for the product. Some carriers may permit quarterly billing on certain products. Once a product is completed, and approved if necessary, the firm can bill On-Line, e-mail, FAX or by mail, per the carriers instruction. There is no up front cost for the system to the carrier or firm. The firm will be billed so much a product which the firm will pay and then bill to the carrier along with other expenses on the file. While the firm will bill for fees at the conclusion on each product they will be able to bill for all expenses on a periodic bases or as often as the carrier permits.
